The movement to transform ICANN into a sustainable, carbon-neutral organization is the result of continuous, dedicated community engagement across the globe. Year after year, the GreenICANN initiative has steadily built momentum, turning a shared environmental vision into an actionable, community-driven agenda.

Here is a look at the key milestones that have shaped our advocacy and the path we are charting for the future.

2022: Laying the Groundwork in Kuala Lumpur

In October 2022, during ICANN75 in Kuala Lumpur, the initiative took a significant step forward. We held vital meetings with senior ICANN staff and the cross-community Green Team to lay the functional foundation for our environmental goals. It was during this event that Javier and Raoul took the stage at the community open forum, publicly championing the vision of a carbon-neutral organization and sparking broader conversations about sustainability within the global infrastructure.

2023: Strategic Alignment and the Community Spotlight

The following year was defined by strategic growth, careful planning, and expanding our global network. We focused on turning our initial outreach into structured community engagement:

  • March 2023 (ICANN Cancun): We advanced our outreach significantly by engaging in highly productive discussions with Lise Fuhr of ETNO, bridging vital connections with key industry leaders.
  • June 2023 (ICANN77, Washington, D.C.): Recognizing the need for a cohesive roadmap, we dedicated this gathering entirely to intensive planning and strategic alignment, ensuring our core objectives were sharply defined.
  • October 2023 (ICANN78, Hamburg): Our careful preparation culminated in a major institutional milestone. We successfully organized our efforts to secure a dedicated session, bringing the green initiative front and center and placing it firmly in the spotlight for the wider ICANN community to evaluate and support.

2025: Sustaining the Drive in Dublin

As the movement matures, the need for fresh energy and widespread community involvement only grows. In March 2025, at ICANN84 in Dublin, the focus shifted from introduction to endurance. Tanpani issued a powerful call to action, actively encouraging new volunteers to step up and join the cause.

Maintaining the tempo of this advocacy is critical. The journey toward a truly green ICANN relies entirely on the sustained energy and commitment of its volunteers, ensuring that environmental responsibility remains a top, actionable priority for the future of the Internet.
